In an era where the urgency of climate action reverberates globally, the commitment to preserving our natural world has never been more critical. United with Nature, UWC Costa Rica’s initiative embodies this ethos by dedicating 80% of its new campus area to biodiversity conservation and educational endeavors to curb global warming.

The challenge we face is immense. The Paris Agreement of 2015 underscored the gravity of climate change, urging nations to unite in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming. Yet, despite these efforts, the alarming rise in temperatures persists. From record-breaking heatwaves to intensifying precipitation patterns, the consequences of climate change are evident in our daily lives, causing damage to nature and humanity.

UWC Costa Rica is taking tangible steps to combat this crisis. By 2025, our new campus will encompass 93 acres of forest adjacent to the Braulio Carrillo National Park, a biodiversity sanctuary in Costa Rica. This serves as a bastion for conservation and an immersive learning environment where students can engage with nature firsthand, fostering a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with the environment.

But our impact extends beyond the confines of our campus. We anticipate offsetting approximately 20,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually by dedicating most of our property to conservation efforts. This contribution is not merely symbolic; it represents a tangible step towards global warming mitigation, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability on a broader scale.

Yet, our efforts cannot exist in isolation. We invite others to join us in this endeavor, recognizing that we possess the power to effect change when united. Together, we can confront the challenges of climate change and pave the way for a more sustainable future where humanity and nature thrive in harmony.

Expanding on our commitment, our approach is multifaceted. Through collaboration with academia, government institutions, and students, we’re fostering a collaborative ecosystem where innovative solutions to climate change can flourish. By leveraging our new campus as a living laboratory, we aim to develop transformative approaches to sustainability that can be replicated and scaled globally.

Moreover, our dedication to conservation extends beyond the preservation of land. We’re actively engaging with local communities to promote sustainable practices and raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship. By empowering individuals to become agents of change within their communities, we’re catalyzing a grassroots movement for environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, our educational initiatives are designed to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. Through experiential learning opportunities, students learn firsthand about the intricacies of ecosystem dynamics and the importance of biodiversity conservation. By instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship, we’re nurturing a generation of changemakers equipped to tackle the complex challenges of climate change head-on.

In addition to our conservation efforts, we’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint through sustainable practices and innovations. From energy-efficient infrastructure to waste reduction strategies, we’re implementing a comprehensive approach to sustainability that permeates every aspect of campus life.

However, our journey towards sustainability is ongoing, and we recognize that much work still needs to be done.
